Balloon Procedures
What are balloon procedures?
Balloon procedures are non-specific weight loss treatments that involve inserting a silicone balloon into a cavity and filling it to fill the space inside. This helps patients feel full quickly, thus limiting the amount of food consumed and promoting a sudden and sustained loss of appetite.
Who is a candidate for gastric balloon procedures?
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
– Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 and 40
– Have had difficulty losing weight through diet and exercise alone
– Are committed to following the dietary and lifestyle guidelines after the procedure
– Have no prior gastrointestinal surgeries or certain medical conditions
Advantages of gastric balloon procedures
– A non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure
– An outpatient treatment with no need for a long hospital stay
– Helps initiate rapid weight loss
– Adjustable and removable
– Promotes healthy eating habits
How it works
The balloon is inserted through the mouth using an endoscope while the patient is under anesthesia. Once in the stomach, the balloon is filled with saline solution (or air, depending on the type) to occupy space within the stomach. The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes and does not require any surgical incisions.

Recovery and post-care
– Most patients are discharged the same day
– Temporary nausea or discomfort may occur for several days
– Gradually reintroducing fluids and soft foods
– Follow-up visits to monitor progress and adjust the balloon as needed
– Adhering to a healthy diet and exercise regimen for optimal weight loss results
